According to Mirat al-Bahrain website, Rim al-Shaalan in a post on his Twitter account wrote that a list has been introduced of the Shia books that are banned in prisons.
He said the books include Mafatih al-Jinan, Makarim al-Akhlaq, Sahifet Sajjadiyeh, and al-Tariq Ila Allah.
Shaalan wondered what could be wrong with prisoners reading such books that are beneficial for any Muslim no matter to which school of thought they belong.
He described the move as an example of violation of freedom of conscience in the country.
Bahrain has been the scene of rights protests on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011.
Manama has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent. On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to assist Bahrain in its crackdown.
